Mornings may be hectic and stressful for some but they can also be relaxing and productive. Starting the day on a positive note is important because that positivity will carry on throughout your day. Hitting that snooze over and over again only to rush out the door can leave you feeling anxious and scattered. Getting up a little earlier and allowing yourself some “me time” will cast a much better outlook on the day ahead. Below are four positive habits to incorporate into your morning routine that will set the stage for the rest of your day.
Water
Drinking water upon waking up is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself. While the required average amount of 64 ounces of water a day is difficult for many people to consume, there are ways to help make it easier. Instead of reaching for coffee or tea upon awakening, try drinking a big glass of water first thing. You can keep a 32-ounce bottle of water available for the morning. If you can manage to drink the whole bottle within the morning hours, then you are already halfway there. Another great bonus; It will actually make you feel more alert than coffee!
Meditation
The benefits of meditation are amazing. There are countless studies revealing that meditation is great for anxiety, depression, improved sleep, and stress relief. If you need help getting started, there are many helpful apps such as Headspace and Insight Timer which guide you through the process. You do not need to think of meditation as sitting quietly with your eyes closed counting breaths. Maybe just sitting listening to music and mindfully focusing on the words is what works for you. You may even want to try using mandala coloring books, making it your intention to solely focus on coloring, rather than the thoughts running through your mind. Anything that gives you a break from the internal chatter and brings you a sense of peace will work. All you need is 10 minutes of meditation a day to reap the benefits.
Journaling
Journaling is a great way to empty your mind of worries or anxieties that could potentially interfere with your day. For many, it is simply making a to-do list for the day while setting priorities. You can also write down what you are grateful for and set your intention for the day. Expressing gratitude and making priorities in the morning will give you purpose and fuel you with positivity and motivation. To see a more extensive list of the benefits of journaling, click here.
Exercise
We all know how beneficial exercise is for us, however, it can often be a challenge doing it first thing in the morning. If you are not a morning person or someone who does not work out much, start out slow by doing some light stretching, and maybe taking a walk. By incorporating exercise into your morning routine, you will not only feel great but will feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction before you even begin your workday.
If you can manage to make at least one of these suggestions a daily habit, you will surely see positive changes in your life.
