I don’t feel like doing anything. I don’t love this as much as I used to. Everything just feels flat

If you feel like this aligns with you, maybe, you’re even relieved that these are put into words, keep on reading. Because what you are doing through has a name, and there is a way out.

Your brain’s ability to feel enjoyment has gone quiet. Not because you’re ungrateful. Not because you’ve become a boring person. But because something like stress, burnout, depression, grief, or something else entirely has muffled the signal.

Think of it like this: you’re still the same person who loves that song. But right now you’re listening through a speaker with nearly dead batteries. The music is still there. You just can’t hear it the way you used to.

Here’s something that makes this feeling especially sneaky: it actually affects two different types of enjoyment at once.

Your ability to look forward to things. To feel excited about next weekend, a trip, or even just dinner. When this goes quiet, nothing sounds appealing, and motivation disappears. Also, your ability to enjoy something in the moment. The actual pleasure of doing the thing. When this dims, even experiences you force yourself to try to feel hollow or “meh.”

So it’s a double hit. You don’t look forward to things, and you don’t enjoy them when they happen. No wonder it’s exhausting. No wonder it makes you wonder if something is permanently wrong.

It isn’t. Here’s what can actually help.

Do the thing anyway

This one sounds annoying, but stay with it. The truth is that waiting until you feel better before doing the things you love almost never works. You have to go through the back door. Do the thing first, and let the feelings (maybe, slowly) follow.

Start small. Go on a two-minute walk or listen to that one song you used to love. Make yourself a cup of something warm; it doesn’t have to feel meaningful yet, it just has to happen. Drop by drop, you’re filling something back up.

One important note: this isn’t about productivity. Don’t use this to power through your to-do list. The only goal here is meaning and enjoyment, or even just the memory of what enjoyment used to feel like.

If you’ve been in this fog so long you’ve forgotten what you even like, try going back further. What did you love as a kid? That’s not a silly question. Riding bikes, drawing, baking. Those things don’t expire. They just get buried.

Savor the small stuff

The practice of savoring is about turning up the volume on small moments before that voice can dismiss them. When you make your coffee in the morning, take a moment to smell it. When a song hits right, let yourself notice that it hits right.

This isn’t toxic positivity, it’s just refusing to let your feelings immediately write off the tiny good things before they can register.

At the end of each day, try writing down three small things that were okay. It sounds simple because it is. But over time, you’re training your brain to notice and hold onto moments of aliveness instead of letting them slip through.

If you’re in this place right now, there’s probably a part of you that’s waiting for someone to just say it plainly. So here it is:

You are not lazy or broken. You have not permanently lost the ability to enjoy your life. What you’re experiencing is something that happens to a lot of people, especially people who’ve been carrying a lot for a long time without enough support.

The spark isn’t gone. It’s just buried under something heavy. And you don’t have to dig through it alone.
