Feelings of being emotionally numb can be unsettling and isolating. You may not be fully sad, but you are also not fully present either.

This often shows up in many different ways.  You may feel disconnected from yourself; you may appear to be doing well on the outside, however from the inside, something does not quite feel right.

Emotional numbness is more common than many people realize. It can show up during times of stress, anxiety, burnout, or when life feels overwhelming.  This does not mean anything is wrong with you; it is a coping mechanism that helps your mind and body. With support and intention, small daily habits can help you reconnect and cope differently.

Movement:

  • When emotions feel distant, the body is a gentler place to begin. Research shows that daily physical activity can support brain health and mental well-being.  This can be as simple as taking ten extra minutes to stretch in the morning or before bed. Adding just a few minutes of physical activity to your routine can make all the difference.

Routine:

  • Routines can help create a sense of stability and set the tone for the day. A simpler routine can make it easier to take things one day at a time and feel more manageable. Even small daily habits can help create a sense of support and structure. Some people find the habit of simply making their bed in the morning helpful, morning coffee, or even following a skin care routine. Consistency can be helpful when it comes to supporting ways to show up for yourself. Routines are meant to support and fit into yourlife style, not add pressure.  Allowing yourself to choose what that routine is can help you feel more grounded and supported.

Breathing:

  • Sometimes it feels like things in life are moving too fast, and we can’t control the pace of it all. One thing you can control is your breathing; simply allowing yourself to slowly inhale and exhale a few times reconnects you with your body and brings you back into the present moment. The goal is to create a moment you can pause and come back to yourself. It provides a moment of awareness and allows you to feel more connected throughout the day.

Affirmations

  • Affirmations can be a simple habit to support emotional reconnection it involves repeating short, intentional statements to yourself.  The repetition promotes a more positive and compassionate way of thinking, helping you shift how you talk to yourself and create moments of awareness and self-connection. Affirmations can be said silently, written down, or spoken aloud. It supports self-love and helps you to build a connection with yourself, allowing you to feel more connected and supported.

Journaling

  • Checking in with yourself is so important, and journaling allows you to do just that. It is a way you can put your thoughts into words, and it does not need to be long or detailed. It helps make you more aware and slow things down. There is a lot of power that can come from writing one sentence or responding to a simple prompt, and that can be just what you need to help you feel more in tune with yourself.

When it comes to emotional numbness, it is so important to take a little bit of time for yourself to reconnect. Creating small, intentional habits allows you to support that process. Reconnecting with yourself does not need to happen all at once, but with intentional habits like movement, routines, breathing, affirmation, and journaling, you can create the moments of awareness you need.
