Why Going Home From College Can Feel Emotionally Draining

Have you ever experienced that overwhelming feeling of change to your daily routine? Coming home from college, whether for just a weekend, summer break, or after senior year, can be a big change in your day-to-day life. Between the rules, routines, and dynamics of your family, it can feel like you have lost the independence and autonomy you had while living away from home. If you relate to this, you are definitely not alone.

What Actually Makes Going Home So Difficult?

Living on your own is very different from living at home. Whether you are in a dorm or an apartment, you typically have more independence than you do when living with your family. Between doing your own laundry, buying your own groceries, and making your own plans, you do not get to rely on anyone else. While this may be difficult to adjust to at first, it can feel rewarding once you get into a routine. Moving back home can strip away some of this confidence and autonomy, as you may have to rely on your parents to approve plans, lend you their car, or help with responsibilities around the house.

You may also find yourself missing the routines and comforts you built while at school. Whether it is grabbing coffee before class, seeing your roommates every day, or having favorite study spots around campus, college often becomes a place where you establish a sense of familiarity and belonging. Returning home can disrupt those routines, making the transition feel more emotional than you expected.

Hometown friend group dynamics can also cause stress because everyone is constantly changing. You may not be the same person with the same interests that you were the last time you were home, and the same goes for your friends. They may have developed new interests, made new friends, become busier, or even moved away. While this can be difficult to accept, it is a natural part of growing up. It is also common to miss your college friends and the routines you built together. Returning home can sometimes feel like you are caught between two versions of your life, making it harder to feel fully settled in either place.

What Can Help?

Prioritize Your Alone Time

Prioritizing your mental peace and alone time while being home is essential for preventing overwhelming feelings. Make sure you know when to take a break from making plans and allow yourself moments to recharge. Spending time alone can help you reevaluate your priorities, reconnect with your goals, and adjust to the transition at your own pace.

Set Boundaries

Communicating with your friends and family is extremely important. While your loved ones may be excited to spend time with you, it is okay to set boundaries and communicate your needs. Letting others know when you need time to yourself, when you have existing plans, or when certain conversations are causing stress can help prevent resentment and make your time at home more enjoyable.

Keep In Touch

When you are home, keeping in touch with your college friends is important. Staying connected can provide a sense of familiarity and help minimize the drastic transition between school and home. Whether it is through texting, FaceTime calls, or planning future visits, maintaining those relationships can help you feel grounded. At the same time, making an effort to stay connected with your hometown friends while away at school can make reconnecting feel more natural and less awkward when you return home.
