Rush Week Anxiety: You’re Not Alone

Walking into sorority rush week can feel a lot like the first day of freshman year all over again. You’re meeting dozens of new people, making first impressions, and trying to figure out where you belong, all while balancing classes, assignments, and everything else happening in your life. As a PNM (potential new member), this week can feel intimidating and overwhelming, especially when it seems like everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing. If you’re feeling nervous, anxious, or even questioning whether you should participate at all, you’re not alone. Hundreds of other women are experiencing the same emotions and asking themselves many of the same questions. While rush week can be stressful, it can also be an exciting opportunity to meet new people, learn more about yourself, and find a community where you feel supported. Here are some insider tips to sorority rush to help calm your nerves and make the most of the experience.

The Inside Scoop

The girls rushing you are just as anxious. There is a lot of pressure on them as they try to represent their chapter, make meaningful connections, and leave a positive impression on PNMs. They spend hours preparing for recruitment throughout the weeks leading up to rush. Many members practice conversations, learn chapter information, and prepare for recruitment events ahead of time. They want conversations to go well just as much as you do, and they often have questions prepared in case the conversation slows down. The combination of excitement, pressure, and exhaustion can be overwhelming for both sorority members and PNMs.

They have been in your position before. Whether that was one semester ago, one year ago, or even three years ago, the members remember exactly how you are feeling. Most girls can remember specific moments from their own recruitment experience, including the nerves, excitement, and uncertainty that come with the process.

Sororities talk to each other, so be respectful everywhere. If you do not feel a connection with a particular member or chapter, avoid acting disengaged or disrespectful. There are also several topics that are generally considered off-limits during recruitment, including boys, drinking, and controversial subjects. If you are disrespectful during recruitment or repeatedly discuss inappropriate topics, it may negatively impact your experience throughout the process.

Insider Tips

Be Yourself. While everyone says this, it’s true. You do not want to put on an act of who you think a chapter wants you to be. If you join a chapter by pretending to be someone you’re not, it becomes exhausting trying to maintain that version of yourself. Most chapters are not looking for a specific type of person; they are looking for individuals who will positively contribute to their community. Being authentic is crucial when searching for your perfect fit. The strongest connections are usually formed when both sides feel comfortable enough to be genuine. Authenticity allows chapters to get to know the real you and helps you determine whether you can truly see yourself there.

Trust the Process. There is a reason recruitment is structured the way it is. Trust the process, be open-minded, and have fun along the way. Some of the best sorority experiences come from chapters that PNMs were not initially considering. Keeping an open mind can lead to unexpected opportunities and meaningful friendships. Try not to get set on one sorority at the very beginning of the week. Chapter reputations only tell part of the story. Instead, focus on finding the chapter where you feel most comfortable and supported. Consider which community will encourage your academic, personal, and professional growth over the next few years.

Don’t Treat It Like an Interview. Be yourself, have fun, and let your personality shine. Remember, the women rushing you are also trying to win you over. Compliment them, ask them how their day is going, and ask them for advice or tips. Make the conversation personal and enjoyable for both of you. While members will have questions prepared, you can prepare some of your own as well. Go beyond the basics like “What’s your major?” and “Where are you from?” Consider asking fun questions such as, “What’s your most embarrassing guilty pleasure?” or “Who’s your favorite artist?” These questions often lead to more memorable conversations and allow your personality to come through. Focus on building genuine connections rather than trying to give perfect answers.

Prioritize Self-Care. Recruitment week can be overwhelming with early mornings, late nights, constant conversations, and very little time to recharge. Make sure you get enough sleep, stay hydrated, and eat well throughout the week. You do not want to be exhausted while trying to make a positive first impression. You should also dress confidently, but comfortably. Feeling physically comfortable can help you feel more relaxed and confident throughout the day. Most importantly, prioritize your mental well-being. Recruitment can take a toll on your self-esteem, and it is completely normal to feel anxious at times. Try to avoid comparing yourself to other PNMs throughout the week. Everyone’s recruitment experience is different, and focusing too much on what others are doing can make the process feel even more stressful.
