Starting college in New York City can feel incredibly exciting with all the new opportunities, experiences, and challenges. From navigating the subway, to adjusting to a new academic environment and making new connections, it’s also easy to get overwhelmed. Amidst all the excitement, it’s thus crucial to prioritize your mental health. Fortunately, New York is brimming with places where you can pause, reflect, and recharge. Whether you’re feeling stressed from homework or overwhelmed by a new city, we’ve compiled a list of five spots that can support your mental well-being and help you balance college life.

1. Explore the wonders of Central Park

Central Park filled with people.

One of the largest places to escape the stress of city life is Central Park. From the hiking paths to the sprawling lawns, it’s easy to forget that you’re in one of the world’s busiest cities when you step into this wonderful oasis. No matter what part of the park you choose to explore, it’s the perfect place to decompress, exercise, or simply take a break from the urban noise. You can take a quiet walk through the wooded paths of The Ramble, lounge by the Great Lawn, or sit by one of the many ponds that dot the park. Overall, being surrounded by greenery has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve concentration, and increase feelings of peace. And, there are lots of other activities to consider:

  1. Take a mindful walk

Leave the electronics behind and focus on the sights, sounds, and smells around you. The experience of slowing down can help clear your mind and alleviate the pressure of your to-do list.

  1. Join a free wellness class

During warmer months, Central Park often hosts free yoga, tai chi, and meditation classes. These activities are designed to help you center yourself, reconnect with your body, and manage stress.

  1. People-watch

Sometimes, simply observing life around you can be a great way to relax and gain perspective. Whether you’re by Bethesda Terrace or overlooking the Jackie Onassis Reservoir, it’s easy to let go of stress while watching the world go by.

2. Sit on the Waterfront in FiDi

The Financial District (FiDi) is often associated with business and commerce, but it also has a hidden gem for those looking for peace and quiet: its waterfront. The cobblestone streets, combined with views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, provide an incredible backdrop for reflection and relaxation.

The sound of the water, the fresh air, and the scenic views make this area ideal for unwinding. Waterfront areas, in particular, have a soothing effect on the nervous system, and being near water can help lower cortisol levels (the body’s stress hormone). Sitting along the water can give you a moment of quiet, away from the noise of campus and the city.

More activities to consider at the waterfront:

  1. Take a break by the water

Grab a coffee or a snack, maybe a book, and find a bench or a peaceful spot to sit. The sound of the water and the views of the harbor provide an opportunity to slow down and recharge.

  1. Practice deep breathing

Use the calming atmosphere to try some mindful breathing exercises. Focus on your inhales and exhales while looking out at the water to help clear your mind and release tension.

  1. Bring a journal

Journaling in a peaceful setting allows you to reflect on your feelings and experiences. Whether you write about your day, your goals, or your current struggles, it can help process emotions and ease anxiety.

3. Window Shop at The Strand

For those who find solace in reading or browsing books, The Strand Bookstore is an essential stop. Known for its vast collection of books that can stretch 18 miles long, The Strand offers a calm yet stimulating environment perfect for a mental health break.

Reading is a fantastic way to escape the demands of college life and immerse yourself in a different world. Whether you’re into fiction, poetry, or non-fiction, it can reduce stress and offer mental relaxation. The cozy atmosphere of The Strand makes it easy to get lost in a book or just enjoy the process of browsing.

More activities to consider:

  1. Attend a reading event

The Strand frequently hosts author readings, book clubs, and events that allow you to connect with others while engaging in meaningful discussions. These events are a great way to feel connected to your community.

4. Happy Medium Art Cafe

If you’re looking for an interactive mental health experience, Happy Medium Art Cafe is a fantastic spot. With locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, this art cafe allows you to tap into your creativity, making it the perfect place to unwind. The creative activities they offer- like painting, drawing, or pottery- are great ways to express or process emotions and reduce stress. Engaging with art can be meditative and offer a safe space for self-expression, which is essential for true emotional well-being. Further, Happy Medium offers group classes where you can learn new creative skills and meet others interested in similar experiences. Engaging in activities with others is also a great way to foster a sense of community, which is crucial for mental health.

5. Explore one of the Pay-What-You-Wish or Free Student Museums

New York City is home to some of the world’s most iconic museums, many of which offer pay-what-you-wish admission. Exploring these historic NYC spots not only provides a cultural experience, but can also serve as a form of self-care as you’re immersing yourself in art and history. Museums create an atmosphere of tranquility and reflection. Whether you’re admiring the art or exploring exhibits on natural history, they encourage mindfulness and can provide a much-needed mental break from academic pressures.

Museums to consider:

  1. The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers everything from ancient art to modern exhibits. Take time to wander through the galleries at your own pace, allowing the art to inspire and calm you.

  1. The MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art is filled with exhibits that can spark inspiration and offer a fresh perspective. Use the artwork as an opportunity to encourage self-reflection and emotional release.

  1. The Natural History Museum

The American Museum of Natural History provides a peaceful setting filled with exhibits that encourage awe and wonder, the perfect place for gaining perspective and reducing stress.

Overall, starting college in New York City is an exciting adventure, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. Between the academic pressures and adjusting to a new environment, it’s crucial to find places where you can pause, breathe, and take care of your mental health. Whether you’re enjoying the natural beauty of Central Park, getting lost in the pages of a book at The Strand, or immersing yourself in art at Happy Medium, New York offers countless spaces for relaxation and self-care.
