the top 5 questions to ask yourself during a life transition

March 10, 2019

Life transitions can be an exciting or a scary experience. They can be uplifting or they can be a blow to your self-esteem. As you face life transitions, though, it is important to ask yourself at least five questions.

AM I HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

This can be a hard, soul-searching question. It is about more than just deciding if the direction you are heading is the direction you want your life to take. For example, getting your dream job might seem like a wonderful thing on the surface, but it might not be the right direction for your life if it means you have no time to spend with your family.

WHERE DO I WANT TO BE?

This is closely related to the question about if you’re headed in the right direction. When you are facing a life transition, think about your future. Where do you want to be in a year? Two years? Five years? Ten years? What do you need to do to get there?

WHAT SHOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?

This is often a question people ask themselves during what they view as a negative life change. If your twenty-five-year marriage ends or if you are fired from a job that you loved, you might wonder what you could have done differently and what you should do differently in the future. Yet, you may also need to make changes during a positive transition in your life. For example, a new job may require you to establish better time management skills.

WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM THIS?

Every life transition brings with a lesson to be learned. At times, the lesson might be that patience pays off or that you should trust your own abilities. At other times, the lesson might be that you need to take things a little slower next time or that you should be more committed to your work.

DO I NEED HELP?

Admitting they need help is hard for some people. At times, you may simply need to rely on family and friends a little more. At other times, you may need to seek professional in the form of a therapist or life coach. A therapist or life coach may be able to provide you with the guidance that you need to ensure that you make the right decision for your life.

Everyone faces life transitions. Yet, not everyone faces these transitions in the most effective manner. By asking yourself these five questions, you can better overcome life’s obstacles and make the most of life’s opportunities.
