is it a summer fling or the real thing?

June 28, 2022

Summer is almost here, and love is in the air.  But is it the kind of love that has wedding bells ringing or is it a summer fling that’s fun but fleeting? When you are looking for a romantic commitment, expectations need to be clear for both you and your potential partner as you navigate your new relationship.

What is seasonal dating?

It’s interesting how seasons influence the dating game. For instance, from late October through Valentine’s Day, many people have a tendency to engage in cuffing or getting involved in a short-term romance during the colder months of the year.

There are many reasons why you might look for a romantic commitment during the fall and winter. You may suffer from seasonal affective disorder, which causes acute loneliness as vitamin D levels drop due to shorter days and less sun exposure. Or you may have an aversion to attending holiday celebrations without a partner by your side and the idea of a romantic relationship for the duration of the holidays is an appealing idea.

As for the warmer months of the year,  some people often search for a partner to have a summer romance to enjoy, without the commitment that comes with a long-term relationship.

Managing relationship expectations

When you are looking to have a summer fling with someone, you need to be clear about your expectations. Here are some guidelines to go by:

  • Set healthy boundaries from the beginning. Tell your partner what you are looking for in the relationship, as well as what your limitations are.
  • Communicate your needs with your partner. If you are both just looking for a fling, enjoy it for what it is. If you are imagining plans for the future, verbalizing your feelings can help you both decide how far you want to take your relationship.
  • Be transparent about whether or not you are dating exclusively or if there are other involvements on the side. Either way, you need to take precautions and practice safe sex.

Whether or not you are looking for a fun fling or you are searching for something more substantial, when you are both open to discussing your needs and desires, you will create more intimacy together. The key to having a successful relationship is always communication, whether it’s a mutually agreed-upon seasonal romance or a union that’s meant to last.

Just keep in mind that not every relationship has to end in marriage, and sometimes a casual romance will be just the kind of excitement that puts that extra sparkle in your step!
