What Self-Care Can Look Like in Fall

No more heatwaves, humidity, and stickiness. Summer was fun while it lasted, but now it’s time for Fall. There’s something about the first cool morning in New York City. Fall has a way of letting us take a second to slow down, and readjust to a new schedule. It’s important you let yourself do the same.

“Small” activities mean a lot

Shorter days aren’t a problem to fix, rather they’re a cue. Our bodies are wired to respond to less daylight by wanting more rest, and fighting that with the same summer pace leaves us feeling depleted. In times like these, less always means more. Try moving your wind-down routine after work or school by 30 minutes earlier as the sun starts setting sooner. Dim the lights, swap your late-night scroll for a quick read. Take time with your skincare routine rather than checking your emails for that last-minute check.

Warmth on purpose

Make a cup of tea and actually sit with it instead of drinking it at your desk. Pull out the heavier blanket or a heating pad. Light a candle while you do something mundane like folding laundry or answering emails. These small sensory cues tell your nervous system that it’s safe to settle.

Reconnecting with routine, gently

Fall usually signals schedules filling back up, quickly. It’s important to find one or two rituals to anchor the season instead of overhauling everything at once. It can be a Sunday morning where you actually cook breakfast instead of grabbing something on or setting time aside to call a loved one you haven’t caught up with in a long time. Before adding a new fall commitment, ask whether it’s something you want or just something you’re repeating just because it’s September.

Get outside

This small activity does so much for our health. Fall light doesn’t last, so it’s nice to use it while it’s here. Take a walk through a park with leaves are turning, while listening to your favorite album. It doesn’t have to be long, a 10 minute walk on your break during work works too. If you can, plan one outdoor thing each week before the cold really sets in, a farmers market, a walk along the water, anything that gets you in the light before the New York winters take place.

Season of reflection, not just productivity

With a new season, there’s a need to “reinvent” or “change,” but truly you don’t have to treat fall as a second January. You can try a low-key version of it, maybe write down a brain dump of everything you’ve been thinking of versus automatically doing everything on autopilot. You don’t need an action plan for anything, it’s sometimes nice to just notice what you’re thinking about.

Just remember, fall isn’t a time to be optimized for productivity and change. What’s important is keeping a solid routine to our everchanging seasons that bring different weather!
