As 2023 is coming to a close, we find that the end of the year is a great time to reflect on the progress that you have made over the last 12 months. It’s easy to get caught up in our day to day lives without paying notice of where you started to where you have ended up. Reflecting on your year is a helpful benchmark in identifying what you were able to accomplish, see how far you have come in your journey and identify any areas you want to grow from moving forward. These insights can help set you up with clarity and direction as we head into a new year.
It’s important to remember that progress is not linear; even the small wins should be celebrated. In celebrating your small wins, you are acknowledging and honoring the effort and work you have been putting in all year long. Sometimes, you may end up taking two steps forward and then one step back, but that doesn’t mean you’re not moving in a positive direction. Actually, each step can teach you valuable lessons that can help lead you to achieve your long-term goals.
Begin with a simple reflection: What are some things you accomplished this year that you’re proud of? It could be something as simple as hitting your daily water intake goals, or maybe it was something bigger like getting a promotion. Try writing down all of your wins. Doing so will help you see what you were able to accomplish and ensure that you are not dismissing any of the important small wins.
We often find that while our priorities change throughout the year, our goals are not adjusted to those changes. Look at the goals you may not have accomplished to help you understand what got in the way. Sometimes, it can be that something else came up unexpectedly and felt more important. Maybe you only finished that first book chapter because you focused on mastering a habit you found more joyful and fulfilling. Or maybe you didn’t get a new job, but you focused on learning valuable skills and making important connections to help guide your career forward. Your goals should come with flexibility and understanding that a change in your plans is more than okay. By identifying the goals you were not able to get to, you can understand what may have shifted or have gotten in the way.
Now is a good time to reassess your goals and evaluate what you’d like to carry with you into the next year. Remember that goal-setting is a process, and it is completely normal for them to shift over the year. While things are ever-changing, your commitment to yourself should be consistently pushing you towards a life that you love.
Be kind to yourself, celebrate your wins, and lean into the lessons you’ve learned throughout the year.
