What is DBT?

DBT aka Dialectical Behavior Therapy which has gained recognition for its success in treating individuals with intense emotions and complex mental health issues. The Cleveland Clinic explains DBT as, ““Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors. Dialectical behavior therapy was developed in the 1970s by Marsha Linehan, an American psychologist. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is especially effective for people who have difficulty managing and regulating their emotions.” It may be difficult to find a therapist who specializes in DBT, but luckily you are in the right place. The Manhattan Wellness therapists are trained in DBT and can help you take control of your emotions and your life. According to Manhattan Wellness, DBT can help if you are having a hard time in relationships, struggling with regulating your emotions which can lead to impulsive decisions and behaviors, feeling like you’re constantly stuck in negative thinking patterns and having a hard time changing them, feeling overwhelmed by your stress and holding yourself back. If that sounds like you, our online therapy option can be a great resource to you to take back control of your life. If you ever wondered whether you could benefit from DBT, we will break it down for you.

The Basics of DBT

As explained by verywellmind, “The six main points of DBT are to develop skills related to (1) accepting circumstances and making changes, (2) analyzing behaviors and learning healthier patterns of responding, (3) changing unhelpful, maladaptive, or negative thoughts, (4) developing collaboration skills, (5) learning new skills, and (6) receiving support.” To get there, DBT consists of four main components which are all aimed at helping to manage one’s emotions, navigate stressful situations and improve relationships. The four components include mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. The first one being mindfulness, includes the practice of being able to stay present in the moment, observing one’s thoughts without judgment and being more aware of emotions and behaviors. This creates a space for intention rather than impulsivity. Secondly comes distress tolerance. Effectively handling stress and pain is difficult and most people don’t know how to do it on their own. Using distress tolerance, counselors will teach individuals how to cope with stress and big emotions that may be challenging without being disruptive. Next comes emotional regulation in which emotion regulation skills come in handy when people experience intense and high emotions. With a counselor’s help, learning how to understand and manage one’s emotions will be key in a more stable mood and mindset with a greater sense of emotional regulation and control. Lastly there is interpersonal effectiveness. This helps individuals focus on effective communication and relationship building. Within DBT, these four key components will help lead to maintaining positive relationships with others.

How do you know if DBT is right for you?

DBT is an amazing technique for individuals who are motivated and ready to make that change in their lives. Although DBT requires a big time commitment and active participation, it can help to manage emotional responses and behavior patterns one is having. DBT offers a unique and highly effective approach to therapy for individuals struggling with a lot of emotions, difficult relationships and harmful behaviors. Using the two main takeaways of DBT, acceptance and change, it helps lead to improvement in one’s emotional and mental well-being. Which in turn can lead to a healthier lifestyle and better relationships.
