Why Real Men Go to Therapy: Confronting the Stigma Head-On

June 5, 2025

What is the deal with men and therapy? Why are they so against it? Why are men SO scared to open up and have emotions? Even though our society has made progress in terms of detaching the stigma around men and therapy, there still is some left. The idea that “real” men can’t have emotions and suppressing them is a sign of strength must be debunked. The reality is that in order to be strong, you should be able to navigate emotions in a healthy way. Therapy is thus a safe place for men to become vulnerable, and alleviate the pressures of toxic masculinity.

When did seeking help become a weakness? Asking for help is actually one of the hardest things to to, and admitting you need extra support is a sign of self advocacy. Communication demonstrates strength and trust in others, and also is a sign we are ready to be the best version of yourself. When it comes to redefining what it means to be ‘masculine’, let’s emphasize the need for masc-identifying people to take care of themselves so they can show up for others in an even more present and grounded way.

If there is a man in your life that you think would benefit from therapy, support from a loved one can also be crucial. This does not just have to be a partner, it can be your friend, your dad, your brother, maybe even your neighbor. The thought of opening up to someone new can definitely feel scary, and offering support and encouragement can help someone feel safe to do so. This can also be a way to normalize the idea of asking for help and show your loved one that it is not such a negative or ‘weak’ thing to do. This can also help to improve interpersonal relationships as well.

Overall, wanting to go to therapy and asking for help can feel challenging and stigmatizing. But, real men go to therapy because they are strong enough to recognize that they want to better themselves and work through their challenges. It is time to redefine masculinity, and make sure society isn’t scared away by vulnerability. Prioritizing one’s mental well being is actually the bravest thing someone can do. It isn’t easy!
