What Happens to the Brain During EMDR Therapy?

November 12, 2024

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR for short, is a special type of therapy that helps people who have gone through very difficult or overwhelming experiences. Many people today have heard of EMDR and know that it can help with issues like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but what exactly happens in our brains during this therapy? Let’s break it down!

Understanding EMDR

EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. She found that moving her eyes back and forth while thinking about a bad memory helped her feel less upset. Since then, many therapists have used EMDR to help people cope with trauma, anxiety, and other emotional issues.

In an EMDR session, a therapist guides the patient to recall a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, often by following the therapist’s hand movements or listening to alternating sounds. This can help the brain process the memory differently.

How the Brain Works

To understand what happens during EMDR, we need to know a bit about how our brains work. The brain has several parts, but two important areas for EMDR are the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex.

  • Amygdala: This part of the brain processes emotions and is often called the “fear center.” It helps us react to threats but can become overactive after traumatic experiences.
  • Prefrontal Cortex: This area is involved in decision-making, thinking, and controlling emotions. It helps us process experiences and regulate our reactions.

When someone experiences trauma, the amygdala can take over, leading to strong emotional responses. The prefrontal cortex might not work as well in these situations, making it hard to think clearly or manage feelings.

What Happens in EMDR?

During EMDR therapy, the goal is to help the brain process traumatic memories so they no longer cause distress. Here’s how it works step-by-step:

1. Identifying the Memory: The therapist and patient start by identifying a specific traumatic memory to work on.

2. Bilateral Stimulation: The therapist then uses eye movements, sounds, or taps that stimulate both sides of the brain. This helps the brain process the memory in a new way.

3. Reprocessing the Memory: As the patient recalls the memory while following the bilateral stimulation, the brain begins to reprocess it. This means the memory may become less intense and easier to handle. The patient can think about the memory without feeling overwhelmed.

4. Installing Positive Beliefs: After processing the traumatic memory, the therapist helps the patient develop positive beliefs about themselves. This could be something like “I am safe now” or “I can cope with this.”

Changes in the Brain

Research shows that EMDR can lead to changes in the brain. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that EMDR therapy can reduce the activity of the amygdala and increase activity in the prefrontal cortex. This means the brain becomes better at regulating emotions and thinking clearly. It also helps integrate traumatic memories into a person’s life story, which makes it easier to understand and cope with those memories.

Why Is EMDR Effective?

EMDR is effective because it helps the brain reprocess memories in a safe environment. It allows individuals to confront their feelings and thoughts while providing tools to manage them. As a result, many people find relief from the symptoms of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and other anxiety-related issues.

EMDR therapy is a powerful tool that helps people heal from trauma by changing how their brains process memories. By stimulating both sides of the brain, EMDR can help reduce distress and lead to healthier emotional responses.
