Sorority recruitment can feel like an end-game for your college experience. This can feel like the most intense and draining experience just as you are starting your college experience. The small talk, the dress codes, and the selection process can feel really overwhelming, and there seems to be a lot of pressure. But most importantly, you are not alone and you can get through this with your head held high.
It is beyond normal to be nervous. You just started a new chapter of your life, PLUS you have to flirt your way into your social life for the next four years? Let’s take a deep breath for a second. This is an unfamiliar space and process, plus having to make a good first impression. There are so many unknowns. That is a lot. Even the potential new members beside you may seem confident, but they have felt nervous at times. Think of these nerves as a sign that you care about the process, and where you feel you belong. Your nerves don’t define you. Recognize that everyone else you are surrounded by is human, and just as nervous.
Being prepared can build confidence, and reduce anxiety, but this can lead to becoming obsessed! Instead of trying to say the perfect line, or wear the perfect outfit, Focus on some basics first.Follow the outfit suggestions given, don’t over think it. For conversations, be you! There are no wrong answers. Before you go to each house, do some research on the values and philanthropies of each house, but don’t become too focused on their social media, and pick one based on that.

It may be hard to remember throughout the process, but you are also choosing. They aren’t just choosing you. It is important to remember that you have to like the house too! You have the power to choose which house makes you feel supported, comfortable and at home. It is a two-way street. It may be hard when you are finding yourself trying to impress a house that doesn’t make you feel super comfortable. Take a step back, and remind yourself that recruitment is about finding mutual comfort and alignment, not forcing a fit because they have a cool instagram feed.
This can be an emotionally and physically exhausting process. Hours of back to back small talk can be so draining. It is important to remember to protect your energy during this process and between rounds. Make sure you are getting a good amount of sleep each night, even though it may be hard with nerves. Bring a bag with you of some snacks and water for between rounds. Journal how you are feeling about the process and about each house to make things easier to process. Allow yourself to listen to music, meditate, or watch your favorite show before or after the day.
The hardest part about this process is the waiting game and the release process. This can be really hurtful when a house does not ask you back, and you may have really felt it was a good match. It may feel confusing. Remember, this is not a judgment of your likeability. Most of the time, recruitment decisions come down to meeting quota, numbers and certain dynamics that have nothing to do with you as a person. It is not personal.
It can be comforting to talk to friends who are going through recruitment as well. Even if they are going through this process at a different school, it may feel nice to talk to someone who is going through the same process. Calling home, or someone you trust can also help to remind you of your worth and be comforting.
Taking care of yourself physically and emotionally will enhance your ability to cope with academic demands and personal challenges.
