SAM IS A PILATES INSTRUCTOR AT NEW YORK PILATES WEST VILLAGE

Jennifer: Please introduce yourself in a few sentences for our readers
Sam: My name is Sam Miles and I am a Pilates Instructor at New York Pilates in West Village.

J: What are you currently doing and how did you get into this field?
S: I am a full time instructor at NYP teaching group classes as well as private sessions, and have been in this field for about 4 years. I played college soccer in Los Angeles and suffered from injuries quite often that took ages to recover from, so I had a PT recommend I try Pilates to help me recover faster and stay strong. From that point on it became a passion and I’ve never looked back!

J: How do you balance a busy career as well as healthy personal life?
S: I think by nature these are ideas that are always a work in progress for people, especially in New York. I try not to be too hard on myself if I have weeks where my career takes precedence; with that being said I don’t check my work email or schedule when I have days off. I try to be as present as I can when I’m at work, as well as when I am away from work.

J: At the beginning of the day, how do you prepare for a good day and at night, how do you wind down before bed?
S: I have a dog which has changed my routine drastically, but for the better! I don’t check my phone at all in the morning so that I am fully focused on preparing for my day. I play with my pup, feed us both breakfast, and usually listen to a 5 minute morning meditation to set myself up in a calm way. I always walk my dog right before we both go to bed, listen to some mellow jams to really just tune out and let my body and mind settle. I love to read right before bed as well to relax and tune out from the real world a bit (I love fiction!)

J: What does your daily wellness routine look like?
S: Truthfully, if I remember to wash my face before bed I count that as a W for the day! I am very easy on myself when it comes to “routines.” I wear SPF everyday, I never skip meals, and I hydrate like crazy.

J: In such a busy and fast-paced city, how do you find time for yourself during the day?
S: If I’m feeling overwhelmed or rushed, I simply close my eyes and take a few deep breaths just for me. It is the easiest way to be alone with yourself and feel your pulse.

J: Any tips to avoid burnout?
S: SLEEP. and try and have some fun when you can 🙂

J: What are three things you could not live without?
S: My pup, daily movement (even just a walk!), and art in any form.

J: What book/podcast are you currently reading/listening to?
S: I’m not a huge podcast fan, but I do love the moth story telling segment. I am reading East of Eden currently and looking to read a non-fiction book next (send me your recs please!)

J: What is the best advice you’ve been given?
S: “start as you mean to go on” which was said to me by my Irish best friends mother. Basically go into any situation in life as you want it to continue.
