MICHELE IS A THERAPIST AT MANHATTAN WELLNESS

Jennifer: Please introduce yourself in a few sentences for our readers
Michele: I am an associate therapist at Manhattan Wellness and specialize in working with young professionals experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and difficulties in relationships.

J: What are you currently doing and how did you get into this field?
M: I can remember, even at such a young age, that I’ve always enjoyed talking to my friends and family about the problems they were experiencing. I loved not only being there to listen, but also supporting them and helping them overcome their challenges.

J: How do you balance a busy career as well as healthy personal life?
M: Balancing a busy career and a healthy personal life can definitely be challenging. I’ve found that the best way to keep balanced is staying really organized and keeping a good calendar. I like to color code my calendar, and if I see too much purple (work related events), I know that I need to make some space for my personal life. I think another helpful tool is to prioritize the things that are most important to me (i.e. working out, grabbing dinner with friends, date nights) in order to make sure that I am saving time to do them.

J: At the beginning of the day, how do you prepare for a good day and at night, how do you wind down before bed?
M: I always start my day with a cup of coffee. If possible, I love adding in a morning workout which makes me feel energized for the day. At night, I wind down by watching mindless TV or reading a book, preparing whatever I need for the next day, doing my nightly skin care routine, and having a cup of sleepy time tea.

J: What does your daily wellness routine look like?
M: My daily wellness routine differs day to day because my schedule often varies, but I do make sure that I include wellness activities on a daily basis. These activities include a work out class and using The 5 Minute Journal in the morning and at night. I really try to incorporate journaling into my wellness practice because I feel like it puts my mind at ease and allows me to process my daily thoughts.

J: In such a busy and fast-paced city, how do you find time for yourself during the day?
M: I am able to set my own schedule, so I really make every effort to set aside some time for self-care each day. On the busiest of days, this may be a quick stop at a coffee shop or walking places whenever possible. On a quieter day I will likely get a manicure or participate in another activity that feels rewarding to me. I often use mindfulness techniques in order to be present and slow down in this fast-paced city!

J: Any tips to avoid burnout?
M: I’ve noticed that we often have this idea that in order to be successful we need to be ON all of the time, but I’ve found that not giving yourself the break leads to burnout. It is so important to take time for yourself and take vacations. We all could use a little break sometimes!

J: What are three things you could not live without?
M: Such a tough question! I would definitely say I can’t live without comfy sweats, pizza, and puppies!

J: What book/podcast are you currently reading/listening to?
M: I’m currently reading Thrive by Arianna Huffington.

J: What is the best advice you’ve been given?
M: Don’t expect change unless you make change!
