Understanding Self Esteem

April 2, 2024

Self-esteem is a person’s overall sense of their own worth and value. It plays a crucial role in mental and emotional well-being, as well as in the way individuals interact with the world around them. Low self-esteem can lead to a range of psychological and social problems, including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and feelings of underachievement.

Self-esteem is a fundamental aspect of human psychology, encompassing one’s overall evaluation of their worth, capabilities, and value as an individual. It influences how we perceive ourselves and our abilities, which in turn shapes our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Understanding self-esteem is crucial for personal growth, mental health, and building positive relationships.

Self-esteem is comprised of two main components

1. Self-Worth: This is the core belief about one’s inherent value as a person. High self-worth means feeling deserving of happiness and success, while low self-worth often leads to self-doubt and feelings of unworthiness.

2. Self-Efficacy: This pertains to one’s belief in their ability to accomplish specific tasks or goals. High self-efficacy results in a sense of competence and confidence, while low self-efficacy leads to feelings of helplessness and ineffectiveness.

Self-esteem evolves throughout life and is influenced by various factors

1. Early Childhood: Childhood experiences, particularly interactions with caregivers and peers, significantly shape self-esteem. Positive reinforcement, encouragement, and a sense of belonging contribute to healthy self-esteem, whereas neglect, criticism, or bullying can erode it.

2. Social Comparisons: As individuals grow, they start comparing themselves to others. These social comparisons can either boost or undermine self-esteem, depending on whether they perceive themselves as better or worse than their peers.

3. Achievements and Perceived Failures: Successes and failures in various life domains (e.g., academics, career, relationships) impact self-esteem. Achievements tend to elevate self-esteem, while repeated failures can lead to a negative self-image.

4. Media and Society: Cultural norms, media portrayal, and societal expectations also influence self-esteem. Unrealistic beauty standards, for example, can contribute to body image issues and lower self-esteem.

Healthy self-esteem has profound effects on well-being and life choices, including your mental health, health of your relationships, and feelings of motivation and success, the inverse can be said for low self esteem.
