Boosting Your Mental Health This New Year: A Millennial’s and GenZ’s Guide to Self-Care

With 2025 coming to an end, the  New Year always feels like it is time to start something new. A time for a reset, realign and a time to set new intentions for the upcoming year. For Millennials and Gen Z, mental health, taking things slow, and a soft life has become crucial. The term self-care has been thrown around recently, and it is a lot more than a face mask and a bubble mask. Self-care means hurting your body, mind and emotional wellbeing. As we get closer to the new year, it is really meaningful to look into ways to boost your mental health, and this does not mean holding yourself to crazy resolutions, but through sustainable practices that fit YOU.

Self-care can mean something different to everyone. What makes someone feel recharged and relaxed, may be something that would stress someone else out. Millennials and Gen Z may feel pressure from social media to make self-care look like an aesthetic  walk in a perfectly matching workout set, and holding a matcha. It is not always about how it looks, but how it feels. Something helpful can be to create a self-care menu. This can look like small actions that meet your different emotional needs. A breathing exercise for stress, maybe reaching out and texting a friend for connection, and one for joy like dancing to your favorite song.

Millennials and Gen Z are the most connected through social media, and this can be very overwhelming. This looks like doom scrolling, endless notifications and comparing all of your aesthetics. This in itself is mentally draining. Setting boundaries with technology can be really important for your mind. Your mental energy is precious. Protect it as you would for your physical health. This could look like setting digital boundaries, and scheduling screen free time, or turning off notifications.

Society has made us feel that rest can be lazy. We have been made to feel that we need to be productive all day everyday. It is actually productive to prioritize rest and sleep, so you CAN be productive. Your body is not a machine, you are human. This can look like avoiding screens a little before bed, and keeping track of your sleep schedule, even on weekends. Juggling, work, friends and school are sometimes hard to not prioritize. Rest does not just mean sleeping, this can look like just downtime without guilt

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to boost mood and reduce anxiety.  This can be triggering for some, as people tend to associate exercise with body image and discipline. Let’s reframe that. Move your body because you love it, not because you hate your body. Find movement that brings you joy, like walking or yoga that you enjoy doing. It is important to focus on how this amendment feels, and not how you look. This is about progress and not perfection.

As Millennials and Gen Z continue to move at a fast pace, it is important to prioritize yourself, and beyond resolutions that focus on productivity and appearance. Instead. Invest in presence, purpose, and peace. Celebrate the small wins, they matter the most and can be the easiest to miss. Mental health growth is not linear!
